Sensitive Skin Solutions: Repairing Your Barrier

Series Part 4: Sensitive Skin Solutions: Repairing Your Skin Barrier with Skin by Cynthia

Sensitive Skin vs. Sensitized Skin

When it comes to skin concerns, distinguishing between sensitive skin and sensitized skin is vital. While they may share similar symptoms, their root causes and treatments differ significantly.

Sensitive Skin: Sensitive skin can be hereditary and often linked to ongoing medical conditions or specific skin concerns like rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis. Individuals with sensitive skin usually experience inflammation, redness, and discomfort that persist over time. These symptoms are often the result of an inherently fragile skin barrier, making the skin more reactive.

Sensitized Skin: On the other hand, sensitized skin is usually a temporary condition caused by external factors. These can include environmental stressors like pollution or extreme weather, overuse of harsh skincare products, poor lifestyle choices, or even certain medications. Unlike sensitive skin, sensitized skin can often be reversed once the external triggers are addressed, and the skin’s barrier is repaired.

Treating Sensitive Skin

At Skin by Cynthia, my approach to treating sensitive skin begins with repairing the skin’s barrier. A strong barrier is essential to protect the skin from irritants and to promote healing. Prior to addressing any specific skin concerns or moving on to more advanced treatments (like chemical peels, “liquid” microneedling, etc.), I focus on reducing inflammation and strengthening the skin.

Many of my clients with true sensitive skin experience chronic inflammation, which I treat holistically. Similar to how I approach acne (because acne is also an inflammatory disorder of the pore), I take into consideration your dietary habits, lifestyle choices, and external stressors. Together, we’ll create a comprehensive plan to reduce triggers and promote long-term skin health.

I’ve adopted Hale & Hush’s 3C philosophy—Consistency, Communication, and Changes.

  • Consistency: Regular treatments and a stable skincare routine tailored to your skin’s needs.

  • Communication: Open dialogue before, during, and after your appointments to ensure your skin’s progress is monitored.

  • Changes: Adapting treatments and routines as your skin evolves, ensuring optimal results.

All treatments include a thorough consultation & skin analysis.
