October: National Eczema Awareness Month

As a Licensed Esthetician I cannot diagnose; however, I can identify eczema characteristics in my clients. Please consult your healthcare provider if you think you may have eczema.

October is Eczema Awareness Month! I am constantly learning more about eczema and I encourage all of you to do the same. This month I wanted to share some facts, raise awareness, reduce the stigma, and build compassion because eczema affects millions - including some of my family members. There’s no cure for eczema, but it certainly can be managed and treated.

What is eczema?

Eczema is also known as atopic dermatitis, and it is not contagious. It’s an inflammatory skin condition that may lead to dryness, itchiness, scaly patches, redness, rashes, blisters, and in severe cases even skin infections.

What causes eczema?

  1. Genetics - Look at your family history. If one of your family members has eczema, it is highly likely that you will have eczema.

  2. Gene Mutation - Those with eczema may have a filaggrin deficiency. Filaggrin is a protein that protects the top layer of the skin from viruses, bacteria, and helps the skin retain moisture.

  3. Environmental Stressors - Those that live in areas high in pollen levels, dry or cold weather may be more likely to develop an eczema flare-up.

  4. Compromised or Overactive Immune System

  5. Skin Barrier Defects

Since eczema is exacerbated by inflammation, the way I treat symptoms is by focusing on healing, soothing and hydrating treatments, ingredients, and products.
